About This Quote

J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, said, “Every story is a story about death. But perhaps, if we are lucky, our story about death is also a story about love.” The idea of life and love as intertwined can be seen in many different situations. For example, we see it when people find love and happiness after losing someone close to them.

We see it when characters experience tragedy yet still manage to persevere and move forward with their lives. In most situations, however, we don’t really see the power of love until the character has been faced with death or loss. In most cases, though, that death or loss comes from outside forces that have nothing to do with the character’s life.

Sometimes it is a result of a crime against them or another person they care about. Sometimes it is a result of a natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane. And sometimes it happens simply because they have been unlucky in some way – they have lost their wallet or they have been robbed at gunpoint.

In each case, however, the character has the opportunity to learn the lesson of death and how love can transcend it. As writer Hugh Mackay said: “Love does not die from loss; those who truly love live on through those they have lost… Love is neither greed nor selfishness; but generosity and selflessness … Love makes us happy because we give something back to those we care for… …Love is not what you get from someone else; love is what you give to others… Love is not a feeling; true love is an action… True love never grows old; true love never dies… Love never fails; true love lasts forever!”
